Russ Hanson, 93, of Dayton, Iowa, died Sunday, January 14, 2007, at the Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton. Ministry Intern Matthew Voyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton. Russell Nels Hanson was born on September 22, 1913, on the family farm south of Dayton, the son of Christian and Mae (Nelson) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. Russ attended country school and later graduated with the Dayton High School class of 1931. He was united in marriage to Eleanor Irene Smith on December 10, 1938, in Fort Dodge. Russ had been employed by Urelius John Deere Implement, worked as a farm hand, and later farmed his own ground east of Dayton for ten years. He also owned and operated Hanson Electric in Dayton for 25 years until retiring. Eleanor passed away on June 11, 1985. On November 21, 1993, Russell married Millie Lundberg at Trinity Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. Millie and Russell made their home in Dayton. Russell moved to Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton in July of 2004. Russ was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. He belonged to the Lehigh and Dayton Senior Citizens and had served on Church Council, Dayton City Council, was a volunteer fireman and had served as chairman of the Dayton Rodeo. He also played the clarinet in the Dayton Community Band. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor Hanson; a sister, Viola Hanson; brother Paul Hanson; brothers-in-law, Donald Hansen and Stanley Manchester; great-grandson Mitchell Pickering; and a step-granddaughter, Joselyn Buckley. Survivors include his wife, Millie Hanson of Fort Dodge: three daughters: Ann (Roger) Johnson, Manson; Bonnie Hanson-Buckley (Jim Buckley), Port Townsend WA; and Darlene (John) Dayton, Greenfield; two step-sons: Harold (Barbara) Lundberg, Fridley, Minnesota and Gary (Marcia) Lundberg, Grover, Missouri. He is also survived by grandchildren Ethan (Chris) Johnson, Phoenix AZ; Karen (Steve) Safly, Ridgeway, Missouri, and Abby Dayton, Des Moines. His surviving step-grandchildren are Duke Buckley, Byron Buckley, and Vernon Buckley, all of Columbus, Ohio; Charlene Buckley, Port Townsend WA, and Aaron Buckley, San Diego, CA. Great grandchildren are Josh, Clint, and Nick Pickering of Mt. Ayr and Manson, and step-greats Dan Depew, Bangkok, Thailand; Renee Depew, Port Townsend WA, Josh Bell and Brandon Partlow, both of Columbus, Ohio. Russ also had two great great grandchildren, Jayden and Chloe Pickering. He is also survived by two brothers: Mel (Maurine) Hanson, Fort Dodge, and Emory (Imogene) Hanson of Dayton; a sister, Loretta Hansen, Carroll; and two sisters in laws, Hazel Hanson and LuVerne Manchester, both of Fort Dodge.
